Preparation for Term 4 Week 2

Lessons will proceed in the following order:

1) Commonwealth Sec paper feedback. Complete the paper handed out at the end of Term 3. We will take 2 lessons for this.

2) Paragraph development using the list of 5 questions we used this week for question analysis. Each group needs to have at least one laptop that can connect to the Internet. We will likely take two lessons for this as well. To make good use of the time, it is best to relook the questions and think of how you might want to develop your points and do some research for examples. One day will be devoted to doing the expository questions and the other day the reflective.

3. Timed practice for Paper 1 (depends on whether item 2 above is well done).

Answers to Fallacies worksheet

Dear students,

Please find in the folder here the slides for our lesson on fallacies this week as well as the answers to the worksheet (it's in Part 2 of the slides). We will not go through them as in class as we have more important and urgent things to do. However, I do expect you to be familiar with the fallacies as I will be making mention to them when giving feedback.

More importantly, here are some things you can do to avoid committing the fallacies:
1) Check that you have the necessary support to make the claim you are making.
2) Check your assumptions. Are they fair assumptions? Are your readers likely to share these assumptions that you have?
3) Qualify your claim appropriately.

Mr Ong Chin Meng

Preparation for Term 3 Week 3

This is what we will do for the week in the given order.

1) Revision of skills for EL O-level oral
Please bring along your mobile phones and be familiar with how to use your mobile phones to do voice recording. Ensure that you have enough memory space to record at least 10 min. You will also need your earphones to listen to the recording.

2) Going through Cambridge 2015 Paper 1 Report**
**No handout can be provided because the examiners' report is a restricted item and cannot be circulated to students or anyone outside of school. Please do not miss this lesson.

To prepare for this lesson, do a detailed essay plan for each of the following questions:
1) Describe the possession that matters most to you and explain why you would never be prepared to part with it.
2) 'The world would be a very dull place without music'. What are your views?
3) 'Shoppers have too much choice, from chocolate bars to jeans.' What, in your opinion, are the advantages and disadvantages of having too many things to choose from?
4) Do electronic devices, such as tablets or smart phones, help or hinder students in their studies?

3) Group writing on google doc
We will be doing some group writing on google doc. Please ensure that each group has at least one laptop (better to have two) which is able to connect to Wireless@CGSS.

Technical note: If you have brought your laptop before and have been having problems with connecting, these are some possible problems:
(a) Browser issue
Solution - Update your browser to the latest version of Google Chrome. This works the best with Google Apps.

(b) Wireless card issue
If your laptop is more than 3 years old and/or is a budget model, you may not have such a good wireless card in it. Now is not the time to ensure equal misery by insisting on taking turns to bring laptops. Just bring the best models your group has. To read up more on wireless technology and what you can do, click here.

(c) School wireless connection issue
This happens sometimes and Wireless@CGSS is not the fastest connection around but I assure you that the connection works on most days. Try to move around and set up your laptop early to try first on the day we are using it.

Mr Ong Chin Meng

Preparation for Term 1 Week 9

Preparation for lessons
Complete the comprehension paper given out to the class on Fri. For those of you who are more confident, complete the paper within the time limit of 50min as a timed-practice for yourself without checking up the meaning of the words you do not know. Check the dictionary after you have completed the paper and write down any questions you have for clarification in class.

Self-directed learning on Feature Article, Editorial, Letter to the editor
Refer to the samples found here. These are real-life Editorials, Feature Articles and Letters to the editor based on the recent issue of the Cross Island Line. Note the style of writing and the type of details included.

You may also refer to the notes found here to help you tell the difference between the three. I have shared this table in class before but I think someone accidentally moved it to another folder.

Note that you can't entirely follow everything from the samples above and what is stated in my comparison table when you are asked to write for a situational writing task. The most important thing is to note the Purpose, Audience, Context and Culture given in the question, follow the bullet point and respond to the stimulus.

Setting up your Google Drive for EL Lessons

Dear students,

My apologies for forgetting to send this out earlier. This email will contain some basic explanation on how to use Google Drive for our EL lessons this year.

Setting up and accessing the folders
1) Click on your class folder below. On the top right corner of the screen, click on "Add to Drive". You will be prompted to select exactly where on your Google Drive you would like to add this EL class folder. Select any location you like.

2) The EL class folder is now accessible directly from your Google Drive without having to click on the links in my email or on the blog. If you do choose to use the links I provide in my emails or on the blog, select "Open in Drive" on the top right corner of the screen to be able to use the full features.

Working offline and uploading your files
All work submissions will have to be done in Google Doc format to facilitate easy access. As such, if you work offline using any other format (e.g. MS Word), you need to convert your files when uploading them onto Google Drive. To do so automatically, do the following.
1) Click on the Settings icon near the top right corner of your Google Drive
2) Select "Settings"
3) Check the box which says "Convert uploaded files to Google Doc Editor format"

All your uploaded files will now be automatically converted to google doc format. To upload from a Mac or from a Windows machine, simply drag your files into the desired folder on Google Drive.

Students without MS Office
Some files I will share with you in the course of the year will come in MS Word or Powerpoint format. If you convert them to the corresponding Google Doc format, sometimes the formatting will change, rendering the document unreadable. To get around this problem, you can download and install free Office software such as Open Office, found at https://www.openoffice.org/.

Thank you for completing the survey. The ICT infrastructure for EL lessons this year has been set up.

Class Blog
1) The class blog can be found at http://cgss2016el4h.blogspot.sg/. Please accept my invitation (sent to your gmail account) to be an author of the blog. You will need to be an author in order to make comments to select group tasks some time in the year. The blog is public. So if your parents would like to keep track of what you are doing in EL lessons, you can give them this link.

2) At the top of the class blog, you will find some links to Google Drive folders as well as the link to my Google Calendar. You will need to be logged in to your gmail account to be able to access these. I will be putting lesson materials (such as slides) in the Google Drive folders for you throughout the course of the year.

3) All group emails I send to you will be automatically posted on the class blog as well. If you prefer checking the blog to your email, you can always go directly to the blog.

4) If you are unable to access any of the items mentioned above, please alert me.

Cohort Facebook Group
As an extension of our EL classroom, your teachers have set up a Cohort Facebook Group for you to hone your skills by engaging in discussions on current affairs and other issues of concern to you. If you have any EL related question, you may also post them on the group.

To join the group, please search for CGSS Level 4 EL 2016 or click here. If you are not using your real name on Facebook, you will only be approved if you are added by a friend who is currently a member of the group. Please note that this group is for CGSS Level 4 students only. For your own security and the optimal learning environment, please do not invite any unauthorised persons.

Regards,
Mr Ong Chin Meng
