June holiday homework

Project Ace (Reloaded)
Redo your Prelim 1 essay (if you attempted an expository essay) or your Project Ace essay. If you already did well for these essays or if you feel that you have absolutely no idea how to improve them such that you may attain a Band 1 score, you may choose a new question from the list found here. Otherwise, you are strongly encouraged to redo to check if you are capable of attaining a Band 1 score.

Deadline for submission: 2 Jul (Sat) 10pm
Submit to the folder found here.

You may start planning for your essays but do not submit your essay before the end of Term 3 Week 1 because we will be learning how to do Creative Persuasion in that week. You would be able to apply some of the skills learnt to improve your writing.

Comprehension Practice
The answers to the comprehension practice papers given out to you can be found here. For those papers which you have yet to receive, please get them from Mdm Pang when you return to school for the additional lesson in June

During the Jun holidays, you should aim to complete at least 2 comprehension papers a week to keep yourself in tip-top condition for the upcoming prelim exams. The remaining papers would serve as practice all the way till the end of your prelims. After that, you will get another set of practice papers.

You are reminded that the answer scheme is just a guide, should you have any doubts about the answers, please raise it.

You are also reminded that the papers and answers should only be used in your capacity as a Sec 4 student at Cedar Girls' Secondary School. Any other use, including (but not limited to) any form of distribution may infringe copyright laws and subject you to disciplinary or legal actions.

Paper 1 Practice
Please revise all the skills you have been taught for Paper 1 in Sem 1. In addition, it would be good to do at least 2 essay plans a week (1 for each type of question) to keep practising your skills and write short paragraphs on your own. You can use the questions given out for Project Ace and Project Beta

"Consultation" during the Jun holidays
Consultation during the Jun holidays is strictly by Facebook post. If you have any questions, please post them on the cohort Facebook group. I will answer you there, including query on comprehension answers (but please discerning and don't just submit all your answers for checking). You can also check your points for your essay plans.

Preparation for Term 2 Week 9

For lessons in Term 1 Week 9, each group is required to have at least one laptop which can connect to the Internet for lessons on Mon and Tue.

Follow-up from MYE feedback
Please refer to the file found here for the marks and very brief comments for the essay samples distributed in class this week.

Worksheet on Sentence Structure (Complete by Mon)
1) Please find the slides for today's lesson here for your reference.
2) Complete the worksheet on Sentence Structure on your own. Erratum: For Exercise 4, please cancel out "Mixed: periodic + balanced + rule of three". It is gibberish.
3) Refer to the file found here. Group action is required. First-come-first-served.
4) For the paragraph your group has chosen in (3) above, individually prepare for the lesson by applying what you have learnt in class on Sentence Structure, Word Choice (Term 1) and Literary Devices (Sec 1 to 4) to improve the writing. You should come to class with your improved sample typed / written out for checking.
5) In class, we will create your group files in the folder found here. Copy your group's selected paragraph(s) over to your gdoc file to work on.

Paragraph development lesson (Complete by Tue)
1) Refer to the file found here for the lesson which was "abandoned" just before the exams because the class did not come prepared. Ensure that you read the articles and research the examples your group has chosen before coming to class on Tuesday.
2) Refer to what your group has written during the "abandoned" lesson found here. Individually consider how it can be improved after you have read the assigned articles and done the research, taking into account what you have learnt about sentence structure.
3) We will spend class time on Tuesday to work in groups to improve the paragraphs.

Mr Ong Chin Meng
